Editing Game - what now?
#CREATIVE EDIT

Hi everyone!

First of all, although I'm a week late: happy new year!

Before Christmas we left game 7 sort of pending: http://1x.com/forum/editing/1110/1386840683
I guess it's now time to close it: Game 7 is over. Thanks to those that participated, Phyllis in the first place, who also gave nice comments on our different edits.

Now, I've been giving this quite some thought and I'm a bit reluctant about starting an eighth version of the game... As you've probably noticed, after the first two or three versions which generated a fair amount of activity, things have gone down to almost no activity... I probably have a big part of responsability in this as I haven't been exactly hyperactive on promoting this, getting new people, new ideas and so on, I know. The thing is, I'm gonna be less and less available in the following months (work...) and I doubt I can do better.

So... what do we do? Shall we close this adventure for good? Do you have any other ideas? Does someone want to stand up and take the responsability of getting things going (this should be with Adrian and Mel's consent, if it is organized within the Editing and Creativity group)?

I'm sorry I wasn't a better "game-manager"... I hope you had fun though. I did.

Cheers,
paco.

HI Paco...
I have a few suggestions....not sure how or if they would work.

l. Try what Martin has in the fresh ideas group which is to say have different people run a game..so it is not all on one person to organize. You could still oversee the process.

2. Do it less frequently...I do not think there is enough time. Give each game at least a month.

3. Write to a group of the Creative Edit stats at lx and ask them to participate.

4. Spend more time on the 'how to'....For example, for me it is fun to see what someone else can do with your photo but it is not so useful if you want to repeat it unless you have more detailed instructions. Example...I loved Arian's remake on my last submission but I don't have a clue as how to go about if I want to do it myself...

Or...you may be correct that there is not enough interest....so lets see if anyone else wants to continue. I am fine with either...
AND a resounding yes...you did a great job..this is not about you...it is perhaps that there are many things going on at the same time...and people choose...

Let's try it once a month and see how that goes. You've done a great job Paco!

Since I always seem to be the contrarian here on 1x, I will say that the audience for these things is quite small and the participation of that audience even smaller. So I would recommend keeping that small base busy by running the games more frequently not less. If later people are missing deadlines and complaining then you can always increase the time. I just think making new games last longer will just shrink the participation. I don't think anybody is not participating because of lack of time...the last couple of weeks being the exception.

Keep it interesting and keep it short and sweet is my recommendation.

And invite, invite, invite...

Paco you did a great job in getting something new going with a lot of great results that I have really enjoyed seeing. If people want to continue then I think it would be good to find a way that works for all. I have some thoughts and a suggestion, not sure if they would work but thought I would throw them out there;

I for one, would like to participate but feel my skills aren't up to par with other participants and not sure of how to approach a total creative edit. My idea (just a thought and may not work) is to try a progressive creative edit for one round. By this I mean get people to say/agree in advance that they want to participate in this round. Then the first person starts by submitting an image to set the stage and passes it to the next person on the list. That person edits however they want, editing and adding whatever other images they want to the composite etc., and then they pass it to the next person on the list and so on. The image keeps changing and keeps getting passed until it goes to everyone who wanted to participate. It could be posted at each stage along the way so people could follow along or could be a surprise for the end?

I was thinking this may be a way to get people to participate that wouldn't take as much of their time as an entire remake and also a way to see what others do that you might not have thought of and a way that you could feel like you contributed to the total effort...without spending a mountain of time on it...but this is just a suggestion and keeping it going the way it has been is fine too...just trying to think outside that box :)

All great ideas Paula. To start, we probably need an indication of how many people are interested in the editing game continuing. So far we have interest from me, Paco, Mycle, Phyllis, Clyde and Paula, probably not enough to keep it going, any others out there who are interested? remember, 'interest' can mean looking at what others do and not necessarily actively participating.

It's an interesting idea... sort of photoshop ping/pong except it's like a chain: person 1, then person 2, then person 3... What I'm afraid is that if we set an order beforehand and one person takes a lot of time then the whole thing is "blocked" and if we don't set an order beforehand then it might go "branch" at some stages... which maybe is not something to be worried about?

I like Paula's idea to work together on something is a good one.

We would not need many people to do this. For example even three people could just keep passing until they could not do more or the owner of the photo said...
stop here..:)

I realized in reading these posts that my only concern is that I see this as fun, and I do not necessarily want to participate every week or in every game. I can however enjoy the process of seeing the image transformed...and from that learn, and think.

We could try it once and see how it work?

One additional suggestion - if we do it this way maybe start with something simple because we will not have access to layers.. Anyhow I am game to participate in the first game.

Has anyone seen Gianni? :))

I am new to all this so probably not good enough for these advanced games. However, I am very keen to learn and see what and how others do things.

There is an "editing competition game" on at the moment:
https://www.facebook.com/TenCollectionSouthAfrica/app_494845897298657

I don't know if you can access this link from anywhere in the world. I see it lists the country.
Try this link, maybe it works better:
http://www.tenbyfotolia.com/#!/za/13/

In any case, it is run by a German (?) stock site and is called TEN.
You can enter different categories. Whichever you choose, you get to download 30 images. You have to use at least 3 of them in your submission, you may add your own pictures into the edit and you can do a lot of graphic design if you can do that (which I can't :-)).

Perhaps this would be a fun project to actually do here and crit and help each other with edits. Then each author can still decide whether they want to enter it into the competition or not.
It closes at the beginning of Feb some time (I think 10th, can't remember any more)

Regards and Happy New Year
